The Gage Project... Service Learning and Sharing Kindness!

G ~ GIVE

A ~  ANOTHER

G ~ GREAT

E ~ ENCOURAGEMENT

I made a video as an introduction to The GAGE Project...
a little over 2 mins long but grab some tissue!

At the beginning of March, Kelly and I presented our vision for a new service learning project to our school. Please read below about the little boy that inspired our project. Together with our students, Our Smart Community collected over 320 stuffed animals (new with tags) for our local children’s hospital. Each animal will be given to a child with a long term or chronic illness in order to “Give Another Great Encouragement”. We never dreamed we would collect so many animals but we are absolutely thrilled to count, sort and tag every single one with a special message, including a handmade card from a student in our classes. Who said learning and caring could not go hand and hand. Our students have had so much ownership in this project and the entire experience has blessed us as well as the Dixon Family (Gage’s Family). Our district has also featured Gage and our project as part of a presentation for BA TV. We are so thrilled with how this has turned out and look forward to delivering the animals to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa at the beginning of April.

A family from TEXAS who read about The GAGE Project stopped by our school to deliver animals on their Spring Break! That is what Give Another Great Encouragement is all about!

Cole brought the first donation!

LOOK AT THIS! We will present these tomorrow at our Monday Morning Jamboree!

Here is a little information about Gage:

Before Gage was born, it was known that he would have difficulties with bladder function. At three, he began having issues with his intestines also. Basically, Gage has no movement in his stomach, small intestines, colon or bladder. When no answers were found, he began traveling to Columbus where specialists continue to treat him for all of these issues. Gage has endured 15 surgeries in the last 2 ½ years resulting in a feeding tube, an ileostomy and a Broviacwhich is how he receives all of his nutrition. Recently, he began having cardiac issues, decaying bones and kidney stones. In March, Gage will travel to Columbus to determine a plan to deal with the new issues in addition to the issues already known. A small intestine transplant is most likely in the future but the family hopes to prolong that as long as possible. By looking at Gage you would never know what he goes through daily. He always has a smile and it is in this spirit of Gage that we hope to GIVE ANOTHERGREAT ENCOURAGEMENT!

Who is Gage and Why did we choose to name this service learning project after him?

Mrs. Parrott and Mrs. Weyher taught Gage in Our Smart Community before his first extended trip to Columbus and his numerous surgeries. He is a Highland Park student even though he is unable to attend school right now because of his medical conditions. “The GAGE Project” is named after him because of his amazing spirit of joy in spite of all he goes through medically. We want to give back to Saint Francis because of all of the good work they do for Gage and children like him.

100 Days Smarter and Ten Frames!

During February, we have been learning about landforms and the United Statesincluding symbols and presidents. We also just celebrated our 100th Day of Kindergarten. We are definitely 100 days smarter! Our students dressed up like they were 100 years oldSTINKIN’ PRECIOUS! We had a variety of activities and decided to do a whole week around the “100” theme this year because there were many things we wanted to teach! J

Each day, we meet for our morning meeting in Kelly’s room literally 3 steps away from our room (LOVE THATwaited years for it). It lasts 45 minutes to an hour depending on what we are doing that day. It is centered around our theme and always literacy-based.  In the afternoon (new this year J), we meet in my room for our math meeting. We do calendar together which is also literacy-based but focuses on math and social studies. Our calendar file (for the Smartboard) is now 17 pages long so we spend about 20 to 25 minutes together. After calendar, we usually have a math lesson and lately, we have been working a lot with Ten Frames. Yesterday, we decided to pair our students for our new Marvelous Math Tubs that start next week and do a FUN Ten Frame activity all together. We ventured out into the pod area and jumped right in. The students had a blast!! Of course, they LOVE anything hands-on and new!

I have to take a sec to say how much I genuinely love to watch Kelly teach. I snapped a couple of pics of her teaching the calendar last week I usually do it and it was a joy to watch her. She is such a natural teacher and it makes me so proud to collaborate with an amazing teacher each day. I know, CHEESY but it is true! J

Winter, Penguins and Antarctica... HERE WE COME!

We LOVED our Winter Break SO MUCH! We spent quality time with family and friendsno travel this year for either of us meant more time to rest and renew!

We literally integrate literacy into EVERYTHING we do in Our Smart Community. We are both very passionate about writing in kindergarten. This year, we have begun working with rubrics. We use a behavior rubric and we have been using project rubrics for several months with GREAT results. The visual examples of each level are key to the success. I have uploaded my rubrics to share with you here:

I also created a fun little listening center extension for winteralso a freebie! Enjoy!

Kelly and I worked about 10 hours AT SCHOOL (not including all of our behind the scenes work) over break. Our rooms were ready to welcome our students into Antarctica on Monday! We both enjoy this unit SO MUCH and our new word walls will enhance our students' literacy learning!

Be Blessed this year!!

Rollin' Out December...

Hi Y’all! J I hope Winter Break is treating you well! I have been working on school goodies the last 2 days I think it is time for a break from creating. Here is a little recap of our month in Our Smart Community. It was BUSY and super fun!

We began our world travels in NOVEMBER. We visit 7 countries and it is really more of a history, cultural and geography unit than Christmas Around the World kind of thing.  We used to do that but after traveling to 4 of the countries together, we had a lot more to share. J Someday, I shall put it all together into a unit it is so busy that I just haven’t found the time yet. Perhaps that will be a summer project.

We teach the 7 Habitswe introduce one habit each month in kindergarten. As an integrated Art/WRITING project, we made Santa and wrote about how we had been using one of the first three habits in our lives. It was super cute to see the ideas! We loved it and our students did as well.

We had SO MUCH fun on our Polar Express Day. We wore our jammies, made hot chocolate and s’mores for treats. We had a blast!

Did you have an elf visit your classroom? SO FUN! Winter came to visit in Mrs. Parrott’s room and Rocket was in mine. The students love finding them each morning. The Students made their own elves the last week before break DEFINITELY  THE FAVORITE project of the month! J
We hope your December was magical, fun and full of learning! J We have been working on writing A LOT and using rubrics in kindergarten to assess our work. I will share a little bit about that next time and add a freebie!
Be Blessed! J

Got Elves?

Our Smart Community has two special visitors! They arrived straight from the North Pole right after Thanksgiving Break! J

I have made a literacy game and a math game to tie our learning to “Winter” and “Rocket”.

This week, our students are making their own elf and a book about their created elf! They were SO excited it was the most popular literacy center choice today!
This is a week loaded with fun tomorrow is Polar Express Day and Thursday is our “WINTER PARTY”. Lots of fun and memories being made Kelly and I are lucky to be part of all of it!

Monday, December 10, 2012

We have been quite the happy travelers since the beginning of November! This two month unit is so much work lots of outside hours put in so it all runs smoothly! We traveled to Mexico first, then Sweden, off to England where we had an amazing afternoon tea, onto France after Thanksgiving Break, to Italy and Australia and our final stop before returning to the United States is Germany! We will enter Germany tomorrow! The customs table is already set up and ready to go!

I had big plans to compile my ideas and projects into a huge unit but I have been too busy to do that so I have plans to work on that during the winter since my winter units are already finished!
